For years I searched for the greatest bed on earth…

Ok, so… this is kind of intimate, but.. you are in my bedroom.

Seriously, that's my bed right there. See. That's me.

I wanted to give you a tour, since if you are anything like me, you know the value that quality sleep plays in your health and performance, and you are probably looking to optimize your sleep sanctuary.

For years I searched for the greatest bed on earth. Ok, that's not completely true. I searched, but already knew what the best and healthiest bed was. My good friend has owned 2 Samina beds for more than a decade and a half. I would use one whenever I visited him. So, I wasn’t searching, I was just avoiding making the investment, and hoping I could find something great on a budget. So I tried various alternatives like organic futons and mattresses, in an attempt to keep my bedding costs down. After years of chronic pain, and annual or biannual bed replacement (I kept buying organic futons, which I now consider short-lived and disposable), I was getting tired of… well… feeling tired. I finally went for it.

Calling Samina the healthiest bed on Earth is a lofty claim, so I thought I would back it up with this photo essay, so you can see for yourself what I am talking about.

Samina Sleep Systems Tour

This is my Samina bed. There is their label, which I can’t read, since it's German. I am guessing it says something like “Sleep Naturally”, but who knows ;) That top layer of the bed is hand-washed merino wool (hand washing keeps the lanolin intact — which naturally repels dust-mites and mold. Go here to learn more about the hidden dangers of toxic mold in your home habitat.) covered in an unbleached organic cotton.

Samina likens this layer of their sleep system to your body’s outer layer, your skin.

Just beneath it is the grounding pad layer. Now, these are an optional component, and a bit expensive, so I’ve only bought one (so far). Good news is they are fairly thin, so the fact that it only covers half the bed isn’t very noticeable. This layer, also made of organic wool and cotton (and a fine silver mesh), plugs directly into your wall-outlet’s ground, creating an electrical connection from the bed to the earth itself. What I love about this layer (made for Samina by a company called Lokosana), compared to other grounding systems, is that it works through indirect contact, rather than by you actually be in physical contact with the pad itself. Your body’s perspired moisture passes through your bed sheet, the merino wool bed topper, and then contacts the conductive silver mesh, which carries the electrical signal to the earth. The Samina/Lokosana grounding layer also contains magnets that give your bed the polarity of a North/South orientation (with your head facing North), no matter how your bed is actually oriented. I don’t know how important that part is, but don’t be surprised if science soon validates the concept. We see this kind of thing happening again and again.

Samina likens this layer to your body’s bio-electrical (i.e. nervous system).

The next layer is the natural tree latex pads, which are again covered in organic cotton. These are luxurious, and have a feel similar to a synthetic “memory foam”, but much, much nicer, and of course, are sourced from nature. These add cushion to the bed, and somehow have struck the exact balance between feeling firm and feeling soft. Everyone who tries it says the same thing as Goldilocks… “This is just right.”

Samina likens to think of this layer as corresponding to your bodies soft tissues. Muscles, joints, and connective tissue.

It’s this next layer that really sets Samina apart from other sleep systems. Instead of the classic mattress or box-spring design, these wooden (it’s ash specifically) struts sit atop of pieces of natural latex, creating a truly unique suspension system. This layer is a bit like a tensegrity structure, and each strut supports your skeleton independent of the strut above or below it. You can see me illustrating that here with a glass of water. Because both halves of the bed are independent, the struts are adjusting themselves to the person on that side of the bed only, personalizing each person's experience. As you can see in this picture, they are very flexible, with an almost organic/lifelike quality.

Of course, Samina likens this layer to your body’s skeletal system.

A few other key points about my Samina.

First, I love that there is no metal in the bed at all (except the silver mesh in the grounding pad). This means that my bedding isn’t acting like a cell phone antenna or wifi receiver while I sleep! Even the frame (made for Samina by Luxlet) is organic (no chemical finishes) and fitted together by tongue and groove, making metal pins, nails or screws completely obsolete.

Second, beneath the strut layer is nothing but air, meaning this bed completely breathes, letting moisture flow through the bed, keeping it off of you and out of your sleep system. This is crucial to a healthy sleep surface.

Of course, while sleep is the main thing we use our beds for, there are other “secondary uses”, and you may be wondering, how does my Samina hold up? Well, they might not like to say so (Samina seems to keep it pretty highbrow) but this is literally the most ideal lovemaking surface I have had the pleasure of using. You can trust that I have put it through its paces!

Samina Sleep Systems Investment

By now you are probably asking the obvious question. “How much does it cost?” The answer is, about as much as a decent used car, which for most of us can come as a bit of a shock. Then, once you’ve taken a moment to think about the amount of your life that will be spent in it, everything comes into focus. We spend far more on our cars than we do our beds, even though we spend less than half as much time in them, and they have far less impact on our well-being. Also, you couldn’t pay me enough to take back all the aches and pains I used to think were just part of waking up, but that I now know were caused by my organic, but low quality beds.

The real answer though is that the cost depends on which model you buy and which options you select. There are a several sizes, bed frames, etc. Expect to spend between $10-20K to outfit your sleep sanctuary with a Samina. I know, it sounds insane, but one night on it and you will agree… This is the greatest bed on Earth.
